Summary Offences cover a wide range of criminal charges generally under the Criminal Code Act 1899 (Qld). These types of offences are dealt with in the Magistrates Court rather than being indicted to a more senior court such as the District or Supreme Courts of Queensland.
These charges generally commence when Queensland Police have issued you with a document called a Notice to Appear (NTA).
This means you have to attend the designated Magistrates Court at the time and date on the NTA. Failure to do so may result in an arrest warrant being issued for you. If a warrant is issued, then you are at risk of being remanded in custody (jail) until the next mention date. That is the date your matter is next before the courts.
It is very important that you seek legal advice prior to your Court Appearance as timely submissions on your behalf to Police Prosecutions may result in a better outcome.
